My awesome son bought me some new karting boots, and took me to Daytona MK for my birthday to have a play on their D-Max karts. The track was pretty damp, and the chap in the safety briefing told us to take the first couple of laps easy, as the tyres would be cold and with the soggy track, we’d spin out if we were too aggressive. He wasn’t wrong. The eventual race winner decided on lap 2 that the quickest way to get past me was to drive straight in to the back of me. I’m pretty sure I’ve gained another old man bruised rib from that. Once I’d got the hang of the kart and started to learn the track a bit, much fun was had. I ended up 8th out of 14, which wasn’t bad for a first go. One thing I didn’t like about the karts was that you can’t rest your foot on the brake pedal…at all. Normally I just rest it there and the brake doesn’t apply until I push down, but it seems even the slightest pressure stops the thing dead in these karts.
I tried to use my phone to get GPS data so I could overlay the speed, but it wasn’t very successful. Seemed a bit hit and miss, but on the plus side my testicles were nice and warm from the phone overheating in my pocket. I think I’ll need an external GPS unit for that as although Insta do an Apple watch app, they don’t do a WearOS one (I have a Samsung watch) which is quite annoying. I could try and write an app for it, but given that most of my karting is indoors where there won’t be a decent signal it’s probably not worth the effort.
